Salvius in a Game
Being composed of recycled and repurposed materials, Salvius has a close tie to Earth Day and has traditionally celebrated by making a post somewhere on social media. Instead of a Tweet or YouTube video, this year Salvius is debuting a small web game in which he must traverse a scrap-filled landscape in order to complete his mission.
Check it out at https://game.salvius.org
Currently the three levels include:
- The Desert - Salvius must travel through a barren wasteland, gathering discarded parts along the way.
- The City of Scrap - Leaving the desert, Salvius now finds himself in a junkyard, but he's not alone and the occupants of this scrap heap have a tendency to chew his wires.
- The Radio Tower - The ground-level controls for the radio tower are out of commission, so Salvius must climb to the top in order to broadcast his message to the world.

Technologies Used
Side note: The sound effects used are probably my favorite element of the game. With zero editing; the "item pickup" sound in the first level is an aluminum can dropping, the sound of the rats in level 2 are a squeaky sliding door, and the jump and land sounds in the third level are a cardboard pizza box opening and closing. Can we consider this audio to be "recycling"?
A majority of the heavy lifting in this game is handled by Phaser (https://phaser.io) which boasts some impressive stats of its own including the ability to render up to a million animated sprites in a single draw cell with GPU support.
What's Next?
Additional levels will likely drop in the future. After Earth Day, Salvius's next favorite holiday is Halloween (because he can dress up as a robot), so expect some possible halloween-themed additions some time around October.
